Pig iron, an intermediate product in iron and steel production, is characterized by high carbon content (typically 3.5-4.5%) and is produced by smelting iron ore in blast furnace, making it brittle and unsuitable for direct applications, but used as feedstock for further processing. 

Application

• Feedstock for Steel Production: Pig iron serves as a raw material for producing various types of steel and cast iron. 
• Further Processing: Pig iron is further refined in basic oxygen furnaces (BOFs), electric arc furnaces (EAFs), or cupola furnaces to produce steel or cast iron with desired properties. 

Direct reduced iron (DRI), also called sponge iron, is produced from the direct reduction of iron ore (in the form of lumps, pellets, or fines) into iron by a reducing gas which contains elemental carbon (produced from natural gas or coal) and/or hydrogen. Many ores are suitable for direct reduction. Direct reduction refers to solid-state processes which reduce iron oxides to metallic iron at temperatures below the melting point of iron. Reduced iron derives its name from these processes.

The iron ore pelletizing process transforms fine iron ore concentrate into spherical pellets through a series of steps including mixing with binders, forming, and heating, resulting in a product suitable for blast furnaces and direct reduction plants.

Application

• It is used for Sewage & Storm water Drainage in Infrastructure Industry for installation within areas subjected to pedestrian and vehicular traffic. Based on load bearing capacity following are the application areas:
• Light duty Manhole covers (LD-2.5) - Suitable for use within residential and institutional complexes/areas with pedestrian but occasional light motor vehicle traffic. These covers are used for Inspection Chambers.
• Medium duty Manhole covers (MD-10) – Suitable for use in service lanes/roads, on pavements for use under medium duty vehicular traffic for car parking areas.
• Heavy duty Manhole covers (HD-20) – Suitable for use in institutional/commercial areas/carriageways/city trunk roads/bus terminals, with heavy duty vehicular traffic of wheel loads between 5 to 10 tones, like buses, trucks and parking areas and where the manhole chambers are located in between the pavement and the middle of the road.
